Last week, I had the pleasure of working with Walgreens by attending their newest flagship store’s Grand Opening event in Washington, DC.
This was my first visit to a Walgreens flagship store and I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the store looked and at how many services and products they offer to Chinatown and surrounding area.
The “flagship” style stores are designed to complement the communities within which they exist by supporting the Walgreens vision of becoming “My Walgreens” for everyone in America and beyond, the first choice for health and daily living.
Located in the heart of Chinatown, the Walgreens flagship store will be a one stop shopping experience for many of the employees and residents in the area. Almost anything you need from pharmaceuticals to electronic accessories and beauty products and services are available there.
The Walgreens core purpose is to help people get, stay, and live well, and by offering an extensive selection of pharmaceuticals, providing 1:1 consultations with pharmacists, and offering a wide range of clinical services, the health related needs of the community will be met in the store.
The flagship stores contain elements of what they call the Well Experience format – a revolutionary concept with offerings like fresh food, enhanced beauty department, and a unique pharmacy format that provides comprehensive care such as health tests and immunizations.
One of the changes I was very impressed with was Walgreens’ decision to move the pharmacist from behind the counter to allow them to provide more counseling to patients and engage with the customers one on one about their health and wellness in a personable manner.
Walgreens Pharmacy and Take Care Clinic
Located on the 1st Floor
The store features three well designed levels of shopping areas. The first level houses the Pharmacy along with the Take Care Clinic, electronics and accessories, gift cards, alcoholic beverages, and household related goods.
Walgreens Upmarket Cafe
Located on the 2nd Floor
On the second level there is an Upmarket Cafe offering a barista preparing fresh brewed premium coffee and espressos, a juice and smoothie bar featuring fresh fruits and vegetables, and hundreds of fresh food items including produce and on-the-go meal options. A Coca-Cola Freestyle machine also dispenses 130 varieties of Coca-Cola fountain drinks.
Walgreens LOOK Boutique Beauty Department
Located on the 3rd Floor
On the third level the LOOK Boutique beauty department features all of the popular cosmetic brands seen in many stores as well as dozens of prestige and niche cosmetic, skincare and haircare brands not typically found in drugstores. The boutique also houses a Nail Bar offering manicures using the latest colors from OPI and essie as well as an Eyebrow Bar for expert shaping and grooming services.
I was impressed by everything this Walgreens has to offer and was excited to shop around after the grand opening for makeup products that I had never seen at any other local stores. Chinatown and the surround communities are lucky to have such a great store that provides so many great products and services. Being able to grab a freshly made lunch on-the-go as well as pick up a prescription and get a flu shot, physical or eyebrow waxing is very convenient. I hope to see more flagship stores providing these types of services opening in the future.
