This month we have been battling sickness. Both of my children, my husband, and I have gotten sick. We’ve gone through so many medications, tissues, and grief, because it seems we are experience this every year around this same time.
When you’re sick you know what to do. You do all of the same things you’ve been doing for years. When you have children things change, and taking care of them through their illnesses isn’t easy. We start to question the things we’re supposed to do for them.
Instinct is helpful, but having the right tools and medications on hand is a lifesaver. I have been fortunate to have success with products I’ve chosen when my kids get sick. Now, I run right to them to help them get better as quickly as possible.
Just like any other mom, I get scared when fevers get too high or coughs seem to linger. I’m not a nurse and I question my instincts from time to time. So naturally, I keep our pediatrician on speed dial and I’m no stranger to visiting the CVS Minute Clinic when needed. Most importantly, I make sure I keep stock of all of the medications and products that I need to help my family through sick season or any illnesses that we may experience throughout the year.
One of my least favorite parts of sick season is fever. Fevers bother me because children often become lethargic and visually sick. Sometimes when my girls have a cold I’ll catch them running around and playing. When they have a fever they end up laying around and they don’t feel up for anything. It’s very possible that they are uncomfortable, because fevers tend to cause a lot of pain. I’ve experienced pain in my scalp before. So the first thing I do is check my children for fever using my Vicks Behind Ear Gentle Touch Thermometer with Fever InSight. I use this thermometer, because it gives me an instant reading and the backlit display makes reading the results easy any time of day or night. I never have to wake the kids up. I just place the thermometer behind the ear and I can see the results in the dark.
If and when my child does have a fever the next thing I do is make sure that I have a fever reducer on hand. Depending on how high the fever is and how she feels determines if I use it. Recently, I was given opportunity to test the PediaCare Smooth Melts and I found them to be an effective pain reliever and fever reducer. My oldest daughter loves them and they’re the most convenient medicine while on-the-go. I don’t have to worry about my girls spilling liquid, they can chew these tablets up. I keep a freezer bag of medicines for my girls when we travel and this no-mess solution really helps me keep everything clean with no rinsing or need for additional tissues.
My oldest daughter, in addition to having her wintertime illness, is also having her adult teeth come in and she’s experienced quite a bit of pain. In order to help her on nights that she is uncomfortable I give her PediaCare Smooth Melts and they help out a great deal.
Another product that is essential for dealing with fever is Be Koool Gel Strips. I am so glad I picked these up randomly one day, because they’ve been so helpful with cooling my kids off when they have high fevers. I recommend them to every mom I talk to. Any time I meet a mom and I can see her kid is sick with a fever, the first thing I’m tell them is they have to have these gel strips. Instead of waking up in the middle of the night to put cold compresses on children these gel strips stick right to the forehead, back, or chest, and you can walk away feeling confident (along with your fever reducer) the fever will be down in a much shorter time.
