My indoor skydiving experience was hosted by iFly
This week I did something I’ve always wanted to do, but I’ve never had the guts to try. I took a chance at skydiving. Sounds like fun doesn’t it? It was, because it was relatively safe. I didn’t actually have to jump out of a plane. I was invited to experience indoor skydiving at iFly (Loudoun), and it was amazing!
I was with a large group of people, who just like me, had no experience whatsoever skydiving. Everyone had a great time. Some people were extremely good at skydiving for the first time… and some not so much. By some I mean me. Everyone in my group rocked…don’t judge me! #PartyOfOne
I’m not very good at indoor skydiving. Not yet anyway! Practice makes perfect.
So here’s the thing, a lot of people have mentioned to me that indoor skydiving is expensive, and I agree. It is expensive, however I think the skydiving experience is worth paying for if you do it right.
So, here’s How To Have The Best iFly Indoor Skydiving Experience, so you get more bang for your buck!
Pay attention in class:
Learning to skydive indoors isn’t like sitting in a classroom in high school and then being tested on paper on what you’ve learned. After a brief instructional class you’re going to experience the real thing. Going into the flight tunnel is serious. So you need to pay close attention in the flight instructions class. Your listening skills will be tested.
Learn the Hand signals:
There are a few hand signals that you’re going to learn as well as body positioning that you need to know. Listening to your instructor and making sure that you know these things before you begin your indoor skydiving experience is important. You won’t be able to talk or hear in the flight tunnel, so you’ll need to know these hand signals so that when you see them you know exactly what to do and when to do it. Doing this will help you get the most out of your iFly experience and you won’t waste your flight time.
Know What to Expect:
Going into the flight tunnel you may not know what to expect if you haven’t paid attention. Even if you pay attention you may underestimate the power of the air that will be blowing at you. It is extremely windy. The air is going to blow directly into your face so hard that it may shock you when you get inside. You may feel like you can’t breathe.
Be prepared for this. Know that it is possible for you to breathe easily if you calm down. You need to open your mouth really big and breathe in and out deeply. Keep calm and you’ll be fine.
My iFly Experience:
I didn’t expect to have the air blowing at me so hard when I got in the air tunnel, and I immediately lost my breath. I became disoriented and I didn’t know exactly where I was. I covered my mouth and shut my eyes waiting for the experience to be over. My legs flew up in the air like noodles and my instructor had to help me recover by removing me from the air tunnel right away. It wasn’t ideal for him, but I could not continue my flight because I was so flustered. Bless his heart.
To avoid this, be prepared. Know what to expect. It’s it is extremely windy, so be ready for that!
Note: In my gif you will see that I lasted less than 6 seconds in the tunnel (this was 2nd attempt at my first minute in the tunnel). I felt like I couldn’t breathe and I couldn’t figure out how to fix it in that moment, so I panicked.
Fortunately, that didn’t ruin my iFly experience at all. I wanted to try it again and when it was time to do my second official flight, I did it. That time and I was in the air a lot longer. It wasn’t perfect, but it was much better than my first try, because I knew what to expect.
Relax and Have Fun:
Some people get into the air tunnel and they fly like birds. My seven year old daughter is one of them. Look at that girl go. The way she flew seemed like she had been flying for years. So seeing that I thought it would be easy for me too. Little did I know indoor skydiving is harder than it looks and it takes work. Don’t judge your experience by the person in front of you or the person behind you. If you don’t do well the first time, try again. If you don’t you’ll second time take a breath and try it again. Just remember to relax and have fun!
