It’s that time of year again and kids are heading back to school. It’s a bittersweet time, isn’t it? Gosh summer is so long, but it goes by so fast. Of course the bad thing is kids have a lot of needs to be met before heading back to school and time is running out. The good thing is it’s Maryland’s Tax Free Week and now is the time you can really stock up and save money all week-long.
Check out a few of the fun Back-to-School finds my girls and I picked up at Arundel Mills Tax Free Week:

Even if the kids aren’t big shoppers they’ll probably be pretty pumped to grab a few new items to show off. As time passed my girls loosened up and we made a pretty fun day of shopping the Arundel Mills Tax Free Week deals.
Here are a few tips that worked for me while shopping with my kids and a few facts about Arundel Mills that will help you with planning your family friendly Tax Free shopping spree.

1. Make a Plan
Arundel Mills is huge. Situated just 10 miles south of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and 6 miles from BWI Airport, Arundel Mills is the largest shopping, dining and entertainment outlet destination in Maryland with more than 200 specialty stores, six sit-down restaurants and home to exciting entertainment like Live! Casino and Hotel, Medieval Times, Cinemark Egyptian 24 and Dave and Buster’s. Use the directory to set up your shopping plan as soon as you get there (or before) and stick to it to make sure you get to all the stores on your list.
From August 13 – August 19, visitors can enjoy extended hours and make purchases tax-free on top of Arundel Mills’ already discounted every day savings of up to 70%.
Extended hours during Tax Free Week will include:
- Sunday, August 13, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.,
- Friday, August 18, 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
- Saturday, August 19, 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
2. Let Kids Choose
Kids want to wear what they like and it’s not always what we like. Let them pick out their style and they’ll be happier to shop with you. Of course you have veto power, but only use it if necessary (ahem…hot pants and saggy jeans, please!)
3. Suggest Cool Finds
Kids don’t always look where they should, but they go wherever their eyes wander. Make sure you’re paying attention and you’ll be able to spot some cute stuff they might miss and you’ll probably find better deals for them too.
4. Shop the Sales and Save
A lot of the stores are offering additional discounts off the already marked down price tags. Use those sales to get more bang for your buck. Arundel Mills is a one stop destination that provides options for the whole family, providing style and luxury that fits everyone’s budget. You can really save a lot of money. I was surprised myself.
5. Have Fun
Shopping isn’t always fun for kids. Especially not when they’re shopping with parents. Make it fun for them. Plenty of stores have interesting displays they encourage kids to enjoy. Don’t just pass them up. Let the kids check them out. Along with day-to-day entertainment found at the property, Arundel Mills has added additional fun with children’s entertainment and giveaways during Maryland’s Tax- Free Week.
6. Help Out in the Fitting Room
Kids don’t really know what fits and what doesn’t so make sure you’re involved in the fitting room. It would suck to get home and find nothing fits them the way they said it did in the store. My girls would trick me every time if I didn’t check the fit.
7. Dress Code Trumps Fads
There are so many cute fads and trends every year. Some are really cool and some bug the mess out of the school staff (remember charm bracelets a la 1986?) Buy what’s fun and fashionable, but leave the distractions on the rack. Can slap bracelets die already? Just wondering…
8. Celebrate Independence Day
It’s important to take a step back and let kids feel independent. It may be your money they’re spending today, but they’ll be spending their own soon enough. They should get comfortable with making purchases and carrying their own bags now.
9. Don’t Forget the Bag
What’s a school year without new backpacks? A boring one. Fortunately, backpacks are dirt cheap these days. Grab one or two at Five Below. They had some really cute ones on display.
10. Count Your Savings
At the end of the day you will be surprised at how much money you’ll save. I saw great deals in every store at Arundel Mills, so this week is definitely the best week to shop for all of your child’s back-to-school needs. Don’t forget to treat yourself to something nice too. You deserve it!
